"Patinas"
(Coloring
Your Bronze)
|
| If a bronze has been exposed to the elements
oxidation occurs and over time, causes a greenish film to form.
This greenish blue coloration is called a "patina".
Over the years, artisans have
learned that they can speed up this oxidation process by applying
different combinations of specific chemicals. And by varying the
combinations, strengths, method of application, and temperature of the
bronze when the chemicals are applied, almost any color can be
created.
The following example is of an untreated bronze. If exposed to
the elements, over time a greenish patina would begin to appear.

| This next photo is the same bronze treated
with chemicals to create its beautiful patina. As you can see, the
colors make this sculpture really come alive.

|
| Once the patina has been created, a thin coat
of wax or lacquer is applied to the sculpture to "seal"
it. This protective coating is done to protect the patina and help
insure many years of lasting beauty. |
